Alabama clinicals for UC nursing students
UC can place graduate clinicals in Alabama, but Alabama's Board expects paperwork from a school based elsewhere before any of its students begin. Under rule 610-X-3-.09 the school lodges a letter of intent no later than 15 days out, along with a yearly fee, and the Board bars students from starting until it approves.

The Board filing that comes before your first hour
Out-of-state programs at both the prelicensure and advanced practice levels fall under Alabama Administrative Code r. 610-X-3-.09. No fewer than 15 days before clinical learning starts, the school must send Alabama's Board a letter of intent plus approval documents. It names each student and their license number, the clinical supervisor and theirs, and the facility, with a statement from its Director of Nursing or CNO.
A yearly program fee comes with it, billed per institution, good for one calendar year and never refunded. The Board's FAQ is blunt: until it approves and the fee is paid, students may not attend Alabama clinicals. Your Clinical Site Coordinator can confirm whether UC has a filing on record for your year, so raise Alabama the moment you name a site, and flag any change of preceptor or facility, since both appear in the filing.
Collaborative practice and who can precept you
AANP puts Alabama in its reduced-practice group. Alabama NPs need a physician collaborator, bound by a regulated agreement that spans one or more elements of practice, and the nursing board splits oversight of NP practice with the Board of Medical Examiners. That agreement is your preceptor's business; UC reviews their degree, certification, time in role and Alabama license.
Physician assistants can't precept you here, since UC takes PAs in only 14 states and Alabama isn't one. Physicians can, where your track allows, provided an NP in your population focus covers at least 20% of NP-track hours. UC preceptor requirements has the track rules.
Why APTIP won't reach your preceptor
Alabama's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program (APTIP), administered through the Statewide AHEC Program Office, offers an income tax credit to preceptors, NPs and CNMs included, who teach without pay in rural, medically underserved parts of Alabama. The Department of Revenue lists it from tax year 2024 until it expires on September 29, 2031.
Eligibility follows the school, though: only rotations for eligible Alabama programs count, meaning institutions physically located in the state. A rural Alabama NP who takes a UC student can't claim it, so leave APTIP out of your pitch.
Where Alabama NP students look
Birmingham is the biggest metro, then Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery. Large systems include UAB Medicine, Montgomery's Baptist Health, Huntsville Hospital Health System, and USA Health and Infirmary Health in Mobile. They show where Alabama NPs practice; ask your CSC about any UC agreement.
Alabama shares its northern border with Tennessee, which UC closes to graduate clinicals, so a site over that line won't work. A clinic in Georgia or Mississippi is possible but runs under that state's rules, and Mississippi runs a separate higher-education review for schools based elsewhere; see Mississippi.
License rules, and why UC students start with us

Its Board requires students in RN-to-BSN, MSN and DNP programs who train in Alabama to hold an unencumbered RN license, either Alabama's own or a multistate one issued by another party state, which matches UC's rule; see RN license for clinicals.

Questions UC students ask
Can I do UC FNP clinicals in Alabama?
Yes. Alabama is open to UC's graduate programs other than the tri-state-only tracks. The difference is timing: UC's letter of intent and yearly fee have to reach the Board no later than 15 days before your start date, and nobody begins without approval. Tell your CSC about Alabama as soon as a site is in view.
Will I be charged Alabama's program fee?
The Board bills it to the program or institution, once per calendar year, with no refund. How UC handles that cost, and whether any of it is passed to students, is a question for your CSC before you commit to an Alabama site.
Does my Alabama preceptor need an Alabama license?
Yes. UC ties a preceptor's active, unencumbered license to the state hosting the clinical, so that means Alabama, and the Board filing lists the supervisor's license number. Your own RN license can come from Alabama or be multistate from any compact member.
Can my preceptor claim Alabama's preceptor tax credit for me?
No. APTIP counts only rotations for programs physically based in Alabama, so a UC rotation doesn't qualify however rural the practice. UC doesn't pay preceptors either; it offers CE webinars and runs annual preceptor awards. Be upfront about that when you ask.
How much lead time should I allow for Alabama?
More than in most states. UC's packet deadline comes first, the Educational Affiliation Agreement usually takes at least six weeks, and the Board wants the school's filing 15 days or more before clinicals. UC's affiliation agreement explains the agreement timeline.
