Preceptors for UC's women's health NP

How the WHNP program runs

Coursework for UC's women's health NP is delivered online, while every clinical hour is spent in person beside a preceptor. UC Online advertises 49 credits and 672 clinical hours, full or part time, often wrapped up in about two years; the curriculum guide spreads the plan over six semesters. Admission opens three times a year, and UC strongly prefers applicants who already have women's health experience.

Two fixed events sit in the plan. The WHNP Clinical Skills Intensive 1 takes one online day during the opening week of whichever semester holds ANW8006. Separately, anyone taking NURS8020C from Spring 2027 onward travels to Cincinnati for its three-day health assessment immersion, even though the WHNP curriculum page still reads “100% online”. The immersion page keeps the dates.

WHNP shares its first practicum, ANW8006, with UC's nurse-midwifery students, and UC assigns both programs the same Clinical Site Coordinator, which is worth knowing when you compare notes with midwifery classmates.

Four practicums, 168 hours each

The sequence moves from episodic primary care to gynecology, then obstetrics, then both together. Course-level rules are on WHNP practicums.

Each 168-hour block has to be completed inside its own semester, so nothing carries across a break. Hour entries, your preceptor's sign-off and the midterm and final evaluations all live in eMedley; clinical hour logs walks through that routine. You also set up at least two conferences a term with your preceptor and course faculty.

Who qualifies as a WHNP preceptor

UC's college-wide bar, covering degree, national certification, a year of practice and a clean license in your clinical state, is set out on UC preceptor requirements. What's particular to women's health comes down to this.

• Certification matched to the role: NCC for WHNPs, AMCB for CNMs, and ANCC, AANPCB, PNCB or AACN for other NPs. OB/GYN physicians qualify as MDs or DOs.
• A fifth of your program hours, at minimum, under a nurse practitioner certified in women's health.
• Once ANW8006 is behind you, an FNP counts only if their practice is OB/GYN.
• Relatives are out. Someone in your own department needs the program director's sign-off, and UC generally discourages that arrangement.

Physician assistants can precept UC NP students only in certain states, case by case and for limited hours. Before counting on one, read PA preceptors.

Telehealth, licensing and state rules

WHNP is on UC's short list of tracks where telehealth time may count, one request at a time and only if the program director agrees. The clinical planning page says whether FNP, AGPC, PNP-AC, midwifery and PMHNP students must sit beside the preceptor for those visits, but it's silent on WHNP. Ask your CSC how a virtual visit would need to be supervised before you plan around it; telehealth clinical hours has the college-wide picture.

Your RN license has to cover whichever state your patients are in. UC keeps seven states off limits for graduate clinicals and asks for extra paperwork from California, North Dakota and Wyoming preceptors; state authorization lists them, along with the states that add a background check.

Where the WHNP search tightens

ANW8006 is the forgiving term because the preceptor list is broad, though an adult primary care or family practice site needs approval, so check it with your CSC well before the packet date. The squeeze comes in ANW8032, which needs a practice that follows patients through all three trimesters and into postpartum. A gynecology-focused office that served you well in ANW8030 may not see enough prenatal patients to carry an obstetric term.

ANW8034 then asks for gynecologic and obstetric care together. A practice that does both keeps you with one preceptor; otherwise you split the term between a GYN office and an OB practice, and each of them needs its own approved packet.

Capacity matters too. UC's preceptor FAQ pictures one or two clinic days a week, while each practicum packs 168 hours into a single semester. Someone who can offer only a morning a week may leave you short, so raise weekly availability in the first conversation.

A few large systems, Cleveland Clinic, Norton and Summa Health among them, want your first contact routed through your CSC, and Cleveland Clinic's contract adds an administrative fee that UC collects from you and forwards to the site. Site fees explains how that works.

Planning against UC's packet deadlines

1. Plan the OB term first. Identify the practice that will host ANW8032, since it's the narrowest fit, then fill ANW8006, ANW8030 and ANW8034 around it.
2. Know your packet Friday. UC wants the packet roughly a season ahead of the term. The exact fall, spring and summer dates sit on packet deadlines.
3. Your section goes first. Complete the student portion of the Preceptor Application; the preceptor fills in the rest and sends it wherever your CSC directs.
4. Budget for the contract. Even UC's standard agreement tends to need six weeks, and a site that negotiates its own paper can stretch into many months.
5. Mind week 2. A term without a confirmed site by the close of week 2 is best dropped before the drop date, which keeps your refund whole. See the week-2 rule.
