UC WHNP practicums: ANW8006, ANW8030, ANW8032 and ANW8034

Four courses, 168 hours each

UC Online's program page puts the WHNP at 49 credits and 672 clinical hours, while the major map, still labeled Women's Health 2017, shows a range of 44 to 49 credits. The hours split evenly: four three-credit practicums of 168 hours, or 56 hours per credit, in semesters 3 through 6 of a six-semester, two-year plan. Semester 2 brings ANW8000 Advanced Reproductive Dynamics, the groundwork before any patient contact.

ANW8006: the broadest preceptor pool

Your first practicum is where UC is most flexible. The WHNP requirements name OB/GYN offices, Planned Parenthood and health departments as settings, and allow adult primary care or family practice with approval. Besides WHNPs and CNMs, UC accepts other NPs, FNPs and physicians for this one course.

Midwifery students take ANW8006 too, as the opening practicum of their MSN, so expect them to be calling the same offices for the same term. Their preceptors must attach a CV, which UC treats as optional for a WHNP preceptor who fills in the form completely. The midwifery sequence is on UC nurse-midwifery clinicals.

Practicums I to III: gynecology, then obstetrics, then both

ANW8030 centers on gynecology: well-woman visits, Pap management, contraception and sexually transmitted infections. An OB/GYN or women's health clinic with a WHNP, CNM or OB/GYN physician on staff is the natural fit.

ANW8032 is the obstetric term. UC's requirements describe care across all three trimesters and postpartum, so the site needs a steady prenatal caseload rather than the occasional pregnancy visit. Start this search early, because practices with that kind of prenatal volume are the same ones midwifery students approach for their antepartum visits.

ANW8034 brings gynecology and obstetrics together in your final term. If one preceptor covers both, ask your CSC whether they can take this course too; otherwise a second site can fill in whichever side felt thinner. Each preceptor needs a completed Preceptor Application on file before any hours count.

Who can precept a UC WHNP student

The college-wide standards for degree, experience and licensure sit on UC preceptor requirements. What this track adds is the certifying body: NCC for a WHNP, AMCB for a CNM, and board standing as an MD or DO for an OB/GYN physician.

Two points shape a WHNP plan. UC requires every NP student to spend at least a fifth of their hours with an NP certified in the same population focus; a four-term plan of CNMs and obstetricians alone misses that mark. And training under someone from your own department takes program director sign-off, which the WHNP document says UC generally discourages.

Family members are ruled out as preceptors, and physician assistants count only in a handful of states; check both before you sign anyone up.

Planning the four terms

1. A term aheadLine up the preceptor for the next practicum and match them to its focus: primary care, gynecology, obstetrics or both.
2. By the packet deadlineComplete your part of the Preceptor Application and have the preceptor submit it. Each term has its own Friday cutoff, set months before the semester opens.
3. While UC reviewsYour CSC vets the preceptor and sends the site UC's Educational Affiliation Agreement if none is active. A standard agreement takes at least six weeks.
4. Before the termApproval shows up as a welcome email and the preceptor's name in eMedley. Finish whatever onboarding the site asks for.
5. By the end of week 2The site must be secured. Any hour logged before the semester opens or after it closes won't count toward the 168.
