UC post-master's NP certificates: internships, residency limits and the preceptors each one needs

How UC builds a certificate plan

Every UC post-master's certificate begins with a transcript review, and the plan of study that comes out of it is yours alone. To be admitted you need a graduate nursing degree, an unrestricted RN license and a year or more of nursing experience in the US. The review looks hardest at three courses: advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology. UC wants each one as a separate graduate APRN-level course that covers the lifespan, passed with a B or better. An integrated course doesn't count.

Anything missing is added to your plan, and graduates of pre-licensure programs, direct-entry MSNs included, take all three at UC. Health assessment matters for travel, because NURS8020C carries a three-day immersion on campus starting in Spring 2027; a certificate student who needs that course also needs a trip to Cincinnati. Start terms differ by certificate. FNP, PMHNP and AGPCNP take students in spring, summer and fall, while AGACNP and PNP-AC start in fall only.

Five certificates side by side

The certificates share UC's placement process but not its internship shapes. Here is how the five compare on who can enroll and what the internships carry, from UC's certificate pages and requirement documents.

None of the five admits residents of the seven states closed to UC graduate clinicals. A neonatal certificate appears only in posted requirement documents, without a current program page; the neonatal NP page explains what to confirm.

FNP certificate: an internship plan written for you

The FNP certificate is 12 to 18 credits over about a year and a half, taught online. Its four internships, ANNP8086 through ANNP8089, carry up to 168 hours each. UC's requirement document says the hours may vary by plan while still referring to the 672-hour total, so your own hour schedule comes from your plan of study rather than a fixed grid.

Preceptor rules mirror the MSN: primary-care NPs, FNPs, CNMs, WHNPs or MD/DOs, a minimum of 60 hours per preceptor, outpatient sites only, and no clinical nurse specialists. Two rules relax for students who already practice as NPs. They need at least two preceptors instead of three, and the 150 hours with an NP or CNM don't apply to them. AGPCNP, AGACNP and PNP-AC: the tri-state certificates

These three admit only Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana residents, so their internships run in the tri-state area. The Cincinnati clinical sites page and the Kentucky and Indiana page cover how local systems take NP students.

The AGPCNP certificate runs 12 to 18 credits over two years, with three 168-hour internships in primary care, internal medicine, family practice, FQHCs or specialty offices for patients 13 and older. UC's AGPC rules keep hours outpatient, require at least 80 hours with each preceptor and bar your own employer as a site.

The AGACNP certificate is hybrid, 8 to 18 credits over about a year and a half, with weekly on-campus labs. UC prefers that one internship be in cardiology and one in an ICU, and Internship II may add a month-long SICU option. The AGACNP DNP page's promise of Cincinnati-area preceptors for local students doesn't appear on the certificate page.

The PNP-AC certificate is 12 credits over two years. Preceptors can be PNPs, MDs or DOs, or pediatric-focused FNPs, in community pediatric practices, school-based health centers or a pediatric hospital.

PMHNP certificate: the intensive, then a therapist before a prescriber

The PMHNP certificate is 15 to 19 credits, and UC Online says it can take as little as 16 months. First-semester students must attend a two-day intensive held online, normally on a Wednesday and Thursday in week 6; the Fall 2026 dates are September 30 and October 1, and Spring 2027's are February 17 and 18. Arrange time off work early.

The internships run in a fixed order. ANPS8028 covers psychotherapy only, under a licensed therapist with at least a master's (a clinical social worker, a counselor or a psychologist, for example); psychiatrists and PMHNPs can't precept it, and California sets its own list. ANPS8030 and ANPS8032 move to prescribers: nurses certified as PMHNP-BC or PMHCNS-BC, or psychiatrists who are board certified or board eligible. Across the internships, each preceptor needs 40 hours or more, a term allows two preceptors at most, you need three or more overall, and each of three age groups needs 100 hours. Washington residents should ask UC before planning a placement there. The Nursing Commission approval list UC publishes for that state includes FNP but leaves PMHNP off, even though UC may run certificate clinicals in Washington.

Planning when the first internship comes quickly

A short plan of study can leave you less search time than an MSN student gets. Work backward from your first internship term, not from your start date.

1. Read your plan of studyNote the term of your first internship and any prerequisite courses UC added in front of it.
2. Match the preceptor to the certificateCheck each candidate against your track's list, and for AGPCNP rule out your employer before you ask.
3. Meet the packet deadlineUC wants the packet by the last Friday in May if the internship is in fall, by the first Friday in October if it's in spring, and by the first Friday in February if it's in summer.
4. Leave room for the agreementUC's own agreement needs six weeks or more; a contract drafted by the site can stretch past six months.
5. Secure the site by week 2An internship with no secured site at the close of week 2 means withdrawing by the drop date for a 100% refund, or risking an administrative withdrawal.
