UC neonatal NP clinicals: what the posted documents say and what to confirm first

Start by confirming the track is open to you

UC's current Academic Programs list has no neonatal nurse practitioner program, and UC's eCurriculum system has no NNP plan of study. Even so, the graduate Clinical Planning page keeps two NNP requirement documents online, covering the MSN and a post-master's certificate, each dated March 2026. The NNP MSN also appears in UC's professional licensure disclosures.

UC's public pages don't say whether it is admitting new neonatal students, teaching out an existing cohort or simply hasn't updated its listings. If you are applying, ask UC admissions in writing whether the track is accepting students. If you are already enrolled, your Clinical Site Coordinator (CSC) and faculty advisor can confirm which requirement document governs your practicums. Everything below summarizes the March 2026 documents, not a current program page.

Three MSN practicums, from the nursery to a Level III NICU

The MSN document spreads the clinical hours across three practicums, and the weekly load grows each term. The first course mixes newborn settings with a block of primary care; the last is spent entirely in a Level III NICU. Course-level detail sits on the neonatal clinicals page.

The 840 figure is the sum of those three per-course numbers, so check it against your own plan of study. UC counts hours only inside the term's official dates, since student malpractice coverage stops between semesters. Clinical time between terms won't count toward any of the three courses.

The post-master's neonatal certificate

UC's second NNP document covers a post-master's certificate built on two longer internships: ANPC8098 Internship I at 300 to 360 hours and ANPC8099 Internship II at 300 hours, each at about 24 hours a week. That is 600 to 660 hours over two terms, with a heavier weekly schedule than the MSN's first two practicums.

Certificate applicants normally need three separate graduate courses in pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment. UC's prior-coursework page makes one exception for neonatal students, who swap the lifespan assessment course for one focused on newborns and infants. As with the MSN, confirm the certificate is admitting before you apply. The post-master's certificate page explains how UC builds certificate plans in general.

If you already work in a NICU, note that UC's neonatal document rules out a preceptor from your own department. Plan the internships in a different unit or a different hospital.

Who can precept a UC neonatal student

UC's NNP requirements accept four kinds of preceptor: a neonatal nurse practitioner, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a pediatrician or a neonatologist. UC's general preceptor standards apply as well: a master's degree or higher, certification in the field, a year or more in the role, and an unencumbered license that is active in the state of the clinical.

UC also expects every NP student to log at least 20% of required hours under a certified NP who shares the student's population focus. For a neonatal student that in practice means a certified NNP, so confirm the split with your CSC. A unit led mostly by neonatologists can still work if NNPs cover part of your time. A relative can't precept you, and neither can someone in your own department.

Telehealth hours aren't available on this track. UC allows limited telehealth case by case for six other tracks, and neonatal isn't among them. The full rule set is on the preceptor requirements page.

Where the NICU search gets hard

Each practicum narrows the pool. ANPC8080 can use nurseries and special care units, but ANPC8084 needs a Level III NICU willing to host you for 28 hours a week across a whole term. Several large systems also appear on UC's list of places to clear with your CSC before any outreach.

Locally, the NP practicum at Cincinnati Children's requires an active Ohio RN license plus its own interest form for APRN placements. The hospital typically opens applications three to four months ahead of the semester, notes that demand outstrips its places and gives its own employees first call. UC also names Nationwide Children's in Columbus among the systems to discuss with your CSC before making contact. The Cincinnati clinical sites page covers the other local systems.

A hospital that prefers its own contract to UC's standard agreement can add months, since UC says that legal review may run six months or longer. If you live in Washington, UC is authorized for MSN clinicals there, but the Washington Nursing Commission approval list UC links doesn't name the NNP track, so ask UC first. Timing the search against UC's deadlines

5. Finish onboarding before week 2If no site is secured when week 2 ends, UC's advice is to drop the course by the drop date, which brings a full refund.
