UC clinical hours by track and course
UC's nurse practitioner and midwifery tracks require 504 to 840 precepted clinical hours, spread over three or four practicum courses that mostly get heavier as you go. The per-course figures come from each track's clinical requirements sheet on UC's Clinical Planning page. A few rules hold in every track: hours count only inside semester dates, a clinical site has to be locked in by the close of the term's second week, and part of your time must be with a clinician in your own population focus.

The PMHNP course numbers above come from UC's 2026 clinical requirements sheet. UC's curriculum guide lists different numbers for those practicums, ANPS8020, ANPS8022 and ANPS8024. The neonatal sheets are still posted even though UC has no current neonatal program page.
Certificates and other practicum programs
Certificate internships have their own course numbers, and the FNP certificate's hours follow an individual plan built from your transcript. Programs outside the NP tracks that carry practicum or direct-care time are here too. Certificate admission and plans are on the post-master's certificate page.

Rules that apply to every track
Every track's requirements sheet repeats these rules, and breaking one can cost hours you already worked.
- Term dates only. UC's malpractice coverage for students runs from each semester's start date to its end date, so preceptor time before the term opens, after it closes, or between terms is not clinical time.
- A site by the close of week 2. Students still without one are told to drop the course by the drop date, which brings a 100% refund; staying on risks being withdrawn by the college or failing. The week-2 cutoff has the detail.
- Population-focus supervision. Every NP track puts at least 20% of the required hours under a certified NP who shares your population focus. Midwifery students need at least half with a CNM or CM. Several tracks set a firmer floor in hours, shown on each track page, and UC preceptor requirements lists who qualifies.
- An agreement before the first hour. A site earns you nothing until its Educational Affiliation Agreement with UC is in effect.
- Verified logs. Your preceptor verifies your time in eMedley about every 14 days; UC clinical hour logs covers how to record it.
The total is not the only target. Most tracks also set minimums by population, setting or preceptor type, and those decide whether your hours count.
Why the later practicums carry more hours
In most UC tracks the first practicum is the lightest and the last is the heaviest. FNP climbs from 168 to 224 to 280 hours, AGPCNP from 112 to 168 to 224, and the neonatal sheets from 168 to 392. AGACNP, PMHNP and WHNP hold at 168 hours in every course.
That shape matters when you ask someone to precept you. A clinician with one open day a week may cover a 112 or 168-hour course and fall short in a 280-hour one, so plan the final practicum around more open days, or a second preceptor where your track allows it.
Two tracks also limit how you pack the time. FNP caps you at 40 hours a week, and AGPCNP sets a four-hour minimum for every day you spend with the preceptor.
Hours on top of the specialty courses
Some students owe time beyond the tables. Every UC DNP, including the BSN-to-DNP nurse practitioner tracks, adds three project practicums, NDNP9025, NDNP9035 and NDNP9038, which UC's DNP Project page puts at 500 hours in total. UC doesn't publish a combined figure for specialty plus project hours.
Nurse-midwifery students also complete 42 lab hours. Kansas residents in APRN tracks pick up NURS8098 Clinical Elective, whose variable credits make up the gap between UC's hours and what the Kansas Board of Nursing asks for. Starting in Spring 2027, students in NURS8020C Advanced Health Assessment spend three days on campus for an immersion; UC lists no clinical hours for that course, so treat the immersion as a campus requirement rather than practicum time. Where UC's documents disagree
A few figures differ between UC documents. When they do, work from your track's clinical requirements sheet and confirm the point with your Clinical Site Coordinator (CSC) before you plan a term around it.

For your track and start term, we look for preceptors whose schedules can carry each course's hours inside the semester, in the settings and population mix your requirements sheet allows, and we start on the heavier later practicums early, since those are the hardest to fit around a working week.

Questions UC students ask
How many clinical hours is UC's BSN-to-DNP?
UC publishes the specialty hours and the project hours separately, with no combined figure. A BSN-to-DNP FNP student completes the 672 FNP hours plus 500 DNP practicum hours, which is 1,172 by our arithmetic. For AGPCNP, AGACNP or PMHNP it is 504 plus 500, or 1,004. Check your plan of study with your advisor.
Can extra hours carry into my next practicum?
It depends on the track. The FNP sheet allows as many as 32 surplus hours per course to move forward. For PMHNP, going past the required hours in Internship I or II takes the program director's sign-off. For the other tracks, the sheets we reviewed don't say, so ask your course faculty or CSC before you log extra time.
Do telehealth visits count toward UC clinical hours?
Sometimes, and only in six tracks: FNP, AGPCNP, PNP acute care, PMHNP, WHNP and nurse-midwifery. The program director decides each request individually. In the FNP, AGPCNP and PNP-AC tracks you stay beside the preceptor for those visits, and your RN license has to cover the state the patient is in. Details are on telehealth clinical hours.
Are post-master's certificate hours lower than the degree hours?
Not always. The AGPCNP, AGACNP and PMHNP certificates each carry three internships of 168 hours, matching the 504 in those degree tracks. The FNP certificate's four internships run up to 168 hours each on an individualized plan, and the PNP acute care certificate sums to 560 to 600 hours. Your transcript review sets the final plan.
How many hours a week will UC clinicals take?
UC doesn't set one weekly figure for every track. The PMHNP sheet estimates about 12 hours a week, and the neonatal sheets 12, 20 and 28 across their three practicums; the other sheets give no weekly pace. UC's preceptor FAQ asks clinicians for one or two days of precepting a week, a reasonable baseline for planning around work.
