UC neonatal NP clinicals: ANPC8080, ANPC8082 and ANPC8084

What UC has posted, and what it hasn't

Neonatal NP sits in an odd spot at UC. The Clinical Planning page keeps a neonatal section with two requirement PDFs, one for the MSN and one for the post-master's certificate, both revised in March 2026. UC's licensure disclosures mention an NNP MSN too. Yet UC's Academic Programs list shows no neonatal program, and the eCurriculum system has no NNP major map.

That raises a question UC's public pages don't settle: whether UC is admitting new neonatal students. If you're already enrolled, the posted PDFs are the clearest public statement of your clinical rules. If you're applying, ask UC admissions whether the track is open before you build a preceptor search around it.

Enrolled students should also confirm which Clinical Site Coordinator handles neonatal placements. The Clinical Planning page assigns one, and that CSC is the person to ask about anything this page can't settle.

The MSN sequence: 840 hours

UC's NNP MSN requirements list three practicums, each with a weekly-hours target. The 840 total is our sum of UC's per-course figures; the PDF gives course hours rather than a program total. Read the weekly targets against UC's semester calendar: the target times the weeks you have left is what tells you whether one preceptor can carry the whole course.

With 392 hours in the last course, there's little slack: UC counts nothing logged outside the semester, and if the NICU isn't secured by week 2, UC's answer is to withdraw from the course. Clinical hours by UC track shows how the neonatal load compares with other programs.

Climbing from nursery to Level III

Each practicum raises the level of care and the time per week. ANPC8080 begins in the well-baby nursery and a Level I or II special care nursery, and 60 of its 168 hours are primary care. UC's PDF doesn't name the primary care setting, so ask your CSC what counts before you book it.

ANPC8082 moves to Level II and III units at 20 hours a week. ANPC8084 is the heaviest term: 392 hours at 28 hours a week, in a Level III NICU. Not every hospital has one, so the final practicum narrows your choices more than any other.

The weekly targets matter if you work. Twenty-eight precepted hours a week on top of a job is a real scheduling problem, and it is easier to solve when your employer, your preceptor and your household know the dates a full term ahead.

Post-master's NNP internships

The post-master's neonatal document lists two internships at 24 hours a week each: ANPC8098 at 300 to 360 hours and ANPC8099 at 300 hours. By our sum that is 600 to 660 hours. Certificate plans are individual, drawn up after UC reads your transcript, so check the hours printed on your own plan of study. The certificate PDF sits beside the MSN one on the Clinical Planning page, so the same open question about admissions applies to it.

One prerequisite difference belongs to neonatal students alone. Other certificate applicants must show three stand-alone graduate courses, each passed with a B or better, and UC won't accept an integrated course; one of the three is a lifespan health assessment. Neonatal NP students swap that one for a newborn and infant assessment course. The other certificates are covered on UC post-master's NP certificates.

Who can precept a neonatal student

UC's NNP requirements name four kinds of preceptor: a neonatal NP, a pediatric NP, a pediatrician or a neonatologist. Each also has to clear the college-wide bar on degree, certification, experience and licensure. Because UC wants a fifth or more of an NP student's hours spent beside an NP certified in the same specialty, a plan staffed mostly by neonatologists needs NNP shifts written in on purpose.

The neonatal PDF also rules out family members and anyone who works in your department. If you staff a NICU, that points you to a different unit or another hospital. The shared rules, physician assistants included, are on UC preceptor requirements.

Finding NICU preceptors

Neonatal preceptors work mostly in hospitals, and every hospital needs an Educational Affiliation Agreement with UC. UC's own template needs six weeks at minimum, and a hospital that prefers its own paperwork can stretch that past half a year. Ask early whether the hospital already has an active agreement with UC, and record the answer on the Preceptor Application.

Near campus, Cincinnati Children's lists UC among the programs in its NP clinical practicum and says demand outruns its places; its application steps, and other area systems, are on Cincinnati clinical sites. Farther afield, check Washington carefully: it authorizes UC's MSN and certificate clinicals, but its Nursing Commission approval list doesn't name the NNP.
