Telehealth clinical hours at UC: which tracks, and from where

The short rule

UC's Clinical Planning page treats telehealth as a limited exception rather than a standard clinical setting. It names six tracks that may count telehealth clinical hours (AGPCNP, FNP, nurse-midwifery, PNP Acute Care, PMHNP and WHNP) and says each case is reviewed individually, with program director approval.

Tracks outside that list, including AGACNP and neonatal NP, have no telehealth route in UC's current guidance. UC also publishes no percentage or hour cap for the six tracks that do. "Limited" is the only measure it gives, so ask how many telehealth hours your plan can include before you build a term around a telehealth preceptor.

One rule applies to every telehealth track: no public spaces. Joining or observing a visit from a coffee shop, a library or an airport gate is out.

Track by track

Every row that allows telehealth also needs program director approval. The WHNP row is the gap to close first: UC lists WHNP as a telehealth track but doesn't say whether WHNP students sit with the preceptor or join remotely.

On-site tracks: FNP, AGPCNP and PNP-AC

For FNP, AGPCNP and PNP-AC students, a telehealth visit still happens at the clinic. You sit with your preceptor at the site while the patient joins remotely. What changes is how the patient is seen, not where you are or who supervises you.

The rest of each track's rules stay in force. FNP and AGPCNP hours must be outpatient, AGPCNP students need at least four hours a day with the preceptor, and every hour must fall inside semester dates and be verified in eMedley. A practice that mixes telehealth blocks with in-person visits can fit; a telehealth-only company where no clinician sits beside you can't meet the on-site rule for these three tracks.

FNP population minimums don't pause for telehealth: women's health (150), pediatrics (200) and adult primary care (322) still have to be covered across the program. FNP practicums sets out the mix by course.

Remote tracks: nurse-midwifery and PMHNP

Nurse-midwifery and PMHNP students may join telehealth visits remotely over live video, so you and your preceptor can be in different places. The visit has to be live, with you joining while it happens, and never from a public space.

For PMHNP students, the internship requirements note telepsychiatry for Internship II (ANPS8030) and Internship III (ANPS8032), the medication-management and synthesis stages; Internship I (ANPS8028) is psychotherapy with a licensed therapist. For nurse-midwifery, at least half of all hours must be with a CNM or CM, and telehealth can't supply the 35 births or intrapartum care UC requires. Treat remote visits as a small part of a mostly in-person plan.

Your RN license follows the patient

UC requires a current, active, unrestricted RN license in the state where the clinical takes place. For telehealth, the Student Handbook and the FNP FAQ tie that to the state where the patient is located. A preceptor in Ohio seeing a patient at home in Michigan puts that visit in Michigan for licensing purposes.

This matters most for remote-track students and for practices that see patients across state lines. Before a telehealth block starts, ask which states the preceptor's patients are in, and check that your license is valid in each. UC's pages don't say how the seven states closed to UC clinicals apply when a telehealth patient is located in one, so ask your CSC before seeing patients there. Who supervises: a conflict to settle first

UC's documents don't agree on telehealth supervision. The Clinical Planning Reference Guide (October 2025) says the student must be physically with faculty during telehealth visits. The May 2026 Clinical Preceptor Guide and the Student Handbook describe supervision by the preceptor, the usual arrangement for clinical hours.

Until UC lines them up, get the answer for your own plan in writing. Ask your CSC who must be with you during telehealth visits, whether faculty presence is required, and whether that differs between on-site and remote tracks. File the reply with your program director's approval.

Getting telehealth hours approved and logged
