Alaska isn't excluded anywhere in UC's lists, needs no UC state form and has no supplemental background check. Compare states on where UC allows clinicals.

Registering your preceptorship with the Alaska board

Alaska puts this paperwork on the student. The board's FAQ says anyone in an APRN program needs its sign-off on their preceptorship, and 12 AAC 44.460 frames that as a registration of you, a student doing clinical work for an APRN program headquartered in another state, rather than an approval of UC. The document is form 08-4253, the APRN Preceptorship Registration, and its fee isn't refundable.

1. Line up UC's side firstAlaska asks to see the agreement tying school, facility, student and preceptor together. For a UC student that's an approved Preceptor Application plus an Educational Affiliation Agreement, and the agreement alone often needs six weeks. Your CSC can say which pages to send.
2. Collect your proofBring evidence of current APRN enrollment and an RN license in good standing; the board takes an Alaska license or one issued elsewhere.
3. File 08-4253Send it with the fee before your first Alaska clinical day.
4. Diary the expiryA registration lapses at the 12-month mark, or sooner if the preceptorship finishes first, and one renewal is allowed. UC's NP clinicals run across several semesters.

The license question

No compact covers Alaska. The board's NLC page notes the legislature hasn't passed a law to join, with HB 131 and SB 124 pending in the 2025-2026 session. Here two rules pull apart: Alaska's registration will take an out-of-state RN license, while UC insists on a license valid in the clinical state. Without the compact, only an Alaska RN license clearly satisfies UC, so settle it with your CSC early. See RN license for clinicals.

The board asks far less of RN-to-BS distance students: a nationally accredited school approved by its own state, and a current, unencumbered RN license from anywhere in the US or its territories. Whether UC's RN-to-BSN direct-care work can happen in Alaska is a question for your advisor; UC hasn't published how it's arranged.

Who can precept a UC student in Alaska

Alaska's form spells out the preceptor's side. They hold an active, unencumbered license, or a privilege, to practice as an APRN or a physician; they work in a practice focus comparable to yours; and they supervise, teach and evaluate you on site. UC's preceptor requirements layer on its usual degree, certification, experience and 20% NP-hours rules. PAs are out, as Alaska isn't on UC's PA list. AANP rates Alaska as full practice.

Faculty licensing turns on time: an out-of-state instructor needs an Alaska RN license once grading Alaska clinical work, plus other nursing education or consulting there, tops 20 working days in a licensing period. That's UC's concern.

Where to look in Alaska, and where we fit

Anchorage is the main hub, followed by the Fairbanks-College metro and Juneau. Alaska Regional Hospital, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Anchorage's Alaska Native Medical Center (tribal health), Palmer's Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and Foundation Health Partners, home of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, are large employers; naming them here says nothing about whether they take UC students. No Alaska preceptor incentive appeared in our research.
