How a late clinical pushes back your UC graduation

Why one late practicum can cost more than a term

UC's major maps place each track's practicums back to back. On the online FNP MSN, ANNP8070, ANNP8072 and ANNP8074 fall in semesters 4, 5 and 6; on the FNP DNP they sit in semesters 6 to 8, with seminars and didactic courses alongside. When one practicum moves, the ones after it usually move too.

UC doesn't publish a formal prerequisite chain for every course, and the sequencing on its major maps is a plan rather than a rulebook. So don't guess how your path changes. Have your Student Success Coordinator lay out the revised plan of study before the drop date, while you still have choices.

The packet calendar after a drop

The packet calendar is what can turn one lost term into two. By the time you know a practicum won't happen, the packet for the next term may be due within weeks.

Losing a summer practicum at week 2 leaves almost no time to get a fall packet in, so the realistic next slot may be later still. Ask your coordinator what can still be processed before you assume either way, and see our packet deadlines page for how the dates work.

What else moves with your graduation date

• Compliance. UC treats a CastleBranch package as a one-time purchase except after a specialty change, a relocation or an enrollment gap, so a term away can mean buying again. Flu vaccination and TB screening renew on their own yearly cycle regardless.
• Your preceptor. The Preceptor Application asks which terms you plan to use each preceptor. Someone who agreed to host you this spring may not be available next summer, so tell them early and ask.
• The site's paperwork. Ask your CSC whether the site's agreement still covers the new dates, and expect onboarding modules or badges to need redoing.
• Campus dates. Nurse-midwifery CSI 2 runs in week 1 of the ANW8062 semester, so moving that practicum moves the campus trip with it.
• Life outside the program. A later finish can shift when you sit your certification exam and start an NP role, and it adds terms of enrollment. Those costs vary from person to person, but they're real, so weigh them alongside the lost term.

Tracks with less room to absorb a delay

Some UC programs have less slack built in. AGACNP, Pediatric Acute Care NP, Systems Leadership and the DNP programs other than Nurse Anesthesia admit students in fall only, while the other online MSNs and the FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP certificates start three times a year. UC doesn't say how often each practicum course runs, so confirm when yours is next offered.

Others carry sequencing inside the clinicals themselves. PMHNP students need psychotherapy-focused Internship I before prescriber-led Internships II and III. Midwifery students need a fetal monitoring course and NRP certification before Practicum II, and at least 35 births by the end. FNP students need ANNP8062 and ANNP8063 before any pediatric or women's health hours.

Limiting the damage

1. Decide before the drop dateWithdrawing by the drop date brings a full refund; staying without a site risks administrative withdrawal or a failing grade. Make the call on facts, not hope.
2. Talk to two peopleYour Student Success Coordinator can map the revised plan of study, and your CSC can tell you what the next term's placement needs.
3. Restart the search nowWork backward from the next packet deadline, which may be close; needing a preceptor fast covers what to do first.
4. Keep compliance currentUC's handbook bars students who fall out of compliance from course enrollment, so don't let CastleBranch items lapse during the gap.
5. Keep your preceptor informedIf a preceptor agreed to a term you're now skipping, tell them promptly and ask about the new one.

Getting the next term moving

Once a clinical has slipped, what you need is a preceptor confirmed comfortably ahead of the next packet deadline, so the new term can go ahead. That's the search we run. We start as soon as you give us your target term, look for someone near you who fits your track and your revised plan of study, and have the Preceptor Application details and the site's agreement contact ready well before that Friday.

If your original preceptor can't take the new term, we check their colleagues at the same site first, since an agreement may already cover them. Then we stay on call through the term in case plans shift again. UC's Clinical Site Coordination team gives the final approval, and we see that the packet reaching them is complete.
