Michigan isn't on any UC exclusion list, so the question is less whether you can train here and more how early you start the license and background paperwork.

Michigan residents can still train in AGPCNP through the MSN or DNP, or in pediatric acute care through the DNP, because the residency limit attaches only to the programs above.

Getting a Michigan RN license in time

Your Ohio or Indiana multistate license stops at the Michigan border. UC's rule is a license valid wherever the clinical happens, and the compact map shows Michigan with nothing more than a pending bill, HB 4246. Until it passes, any Michigan site means holding a Michigan license. Telehealth hours follow the patient's location instead.

Michigan's application has three extra items worth scheduling: a criminal background check, training in spotting victims of human trafficking (a one-time course), and implicit bias training of two hours, completed within the five years before your license is issued. Michigan rules for programs and preceptors

Program approval looks like a non-issue, though nobody asked the Board directly. Michigan's approval rules, starting at R 338.10301 of its administrative code, are written for schools inside Michigan, and our review of the Board's guidance found no registration step for an Ohio school whose students train there. If a site raises it, pass the question to your Clinical Site Coordinator (CSC).

AANP puts Michigan in its restricted category: Michigan NPs prescribe controlled substances only with delegation from a physician. For vetting, one Michigan quirk helps. The state issues NP and CNM specialty certification solely to nurses who already hold a Michigan RN license and a national credential from a certifier the Board recognizes, so a preceptor with that Michigan specialty certification has cleared both.

Unlike Ohio, Michigan appears on UC's physician assistant list, so a PA can precept part of your hours, case by case and for limited time, as the PA preceptor page explains.

Background check, incentives and where to look

UC's handbook names Michigan among the 18 states where APRN students add a supplemental state background check. UC's CastleBranch instructions describe a separate state-specific package code ordered by the preceptor packet deadline, but CastleBranch purchases are on hold right now, so ask your CSC how to handle it; the background check guide has the rest.

The state health department once partnered with Michigan State University on a pilot paying preceptors who took MSU's family and psychiatric NP students, scaled to the hours they committed. It has closed and never reached beyond MSU, and no Michigan preceptor tax credit turned up, so there's no state money to mention when you ask.

Students look around Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint, where Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, University of Michigan Health, McLaren Health Care and Trinity Health Michigan run large networks. None of them is a promise of a UC placement.
