Which UC tracks work from Indiana

Every one. Indiana is absent from UC's excluded states, and it is one of the three states whose residents UC's residency-limited tracks accept.

Indiana's Board stays out of graduate programs

The Indiana State Board of Nursing, which sits inside the Professional Licensing Agency, describes its role as accrediting in-state programs that prepare people for first-time RN or LPN licensure. Its education page adds that RN-BSN and graduate nursing programs fall outside what it reviews or accredits, and its eligibility rule, 848 IAC 1-2-4, speaks only to pre-licensure programs.

So we found no Indiana approval or notice requirement for a school like UC placing NP students here. Nor did our research turn up an Indiana rule written for APRN students from out of state. If a site asks what Indiana requires of UC, send the question to your Clinical Site Coordinator (CSC) rather than answering it yourself.

Preceptors in a reduced-practice state

AANP rates Indiana reduced practice: some element of every Indiana NP's practice has to run under a physician collaborative agreement that the state regulates. That agreement is the NP's business, not a hurdle for you, but it explains why a practice may mention its collaborating physician.

UC leaves Indiana off its physician assistant list, so your Indiana preceptors are NPs, CNMs or physicians who meet UC's preceptor requirements: a master's or higher, national certification, a year in the role and an unencumbered license valid in Indiana. NP tracks still need a fifth of their hours with a certified NP in your population.

On incentives, sources disagree about an Indiana preceptor tax credit; the most careful one we saw found no active credit and a 2023 bill that stalled. Don't offer one to a preceptor as a selling point.

Where Indiana students look, and which borders matter

Indianapolis is the state's largest market, with Fort Wayne in the northeast. Big systems include Parkview Health, Indiana University Health, Franciscan Health, Community Health Network and Ascension St. Vincent. They're places to ask, not sites that have agreed to take UC students.

Three metros spill over state lines. Southeast Indiana belongs to the Cincinnati metro and the south-central river counties to Louisville's, both with compact neighbors; the tri-state Kentucky and Indiana page covers them. Northwest Indiana sits in the Chicago metro, and Illinois never joined the compact, so crossing into Illinois means holding an Illinois RN license.

License, and where we come in

Indiana began honoring multistate licenses on July 1, 2020. UC wants a license valid where you train, so either your Indiana license or a compact license issued by the state you live in will cover an Indiana site. The APRN Compact has no Indiana law behind it.
