Iowa clinicals for UC nurse practitioner students
Iowa is open to UC's graduate clinicals, and NPs there practice with full authority. Two things need planning: UC's supplemental Iowa background check, and an Iowa or multistate RN license, because Iowa's student exemption stops at people who are already licensed.

Iowa's list for programs from other states
Iowa's Board of Nursing, part of the state's licensing department, has no approval process for schools based in other states, but it lists their duties. First comes permission to operate, which the Bureau of Iowa College Aid grants. Then Iowa law applies on top of the home state's rules, the Board can ask for data, faculty and preceptors working in Iowa need an active Iowa or multistate license, and every clinical contract has to cover each party's duties, faculty control of learning, yearly review and how it ends.
All of that is UC's to handle, and the contract terms belong in the Educational Affiliation Agreement with your site. Iowa also leaves preceptor approval to the program and the clinical facility, which matches UC's model of CSC vetting plus a site-signed agreement.
Why Iowa's student exemption doesn't cover you
Iowa Code 152.1 shields unlicensed nursing students who perform nursing within their coursework. The shield disappears for anyone holding an RN, LPN/LVN or ARNP license from any U.S. state or jurisdiction, and every UC graduate student is a licensed RN. So the Board's post-licensure rule governs you: bring either an Iowa license or a multistate one, keep it active, and practice by Iowa Code.

Choosing a preceptor in a full-practice state
AANP rates Iowa full practice, meaning an Iowa NP works without a required physician agreement. UC's own tests still decide: graduate preparation, certification, a year's experience in the role and an unencumbered Iowa license. At least one NP-track hour in five must be spent with an NP in your own population focus. Physician assistants are out, as Iowa isn't one of UC's 14 PA states.
Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule, 481 IAC 616.16, wants most of a student's precepted time spent with an ARNP or a physician whose role and population focus match the student's, with written agreements reviewed yearly. Whether it binds programs based elsewhere isn't clear, but it points the same way as UC's rules. See UC preceptor requirements.
What Iowa gives preceptors
We found no Iowa preceptor tax credit or payment. The perk is on the licensing side: precepting one nursing student through an organized preceptorship of at least 60 hours earns an Iowa nurse 6 contact hours for renewal, provided the supervising school documents it. A preceptor who wants it should ask how UC documents hours before the rotation ends.

The Des Moines-West Des Moines metro is the state's biggest, followed by Cedar Rapids and Iowa City; Davenport shares a metro with Moline and Rock Island, Illinois. University of Iowa Health Care, MercyOne and UnityPoint Health are the large systems; each would need UC's agreement first. A Moline or Rock Island clinic is an Illinois clinical, with Illinois rules, its own UC background check and a UC PA option Iowa lacks.

Questions UC students ask
Do I need an Iowa RN license for UC clinicals in Iowa?
Yes, or a multistate license, and it must be active. Iowa's student exemption covers only unlicensed students, so as a licensed RN you can't use it. UC separately requires the license to be current and unrestricted in whichever state hosts your clinical.
Does UC require an Iowa background check?
Yes. Iowa is one of 18 states in UC's 2026-27 handbook that trigger a supplemental, state-specific check for APRN students. The handbook puts extra checks and fingerprinting on the student's bill, so plan the cost and order it well before your term starts.
What does an Iowa preceptor get for teaching me?
No state payment or tax credit turned up in our research. What Iowa offers is renewal credit: 60 or more precepted hours in an organized preceptorship count as 6 contact hours once the school documents them. UC adds CE webinars, but it doesn't pay preceptors.
Can I train on the Illinois side of the Davenport metro?
Illinois is open to UC, so yes, but that clinical runs under Illinois rules and UC's Illinois steps, including a supplemental background check. Illinois is also one of the states where UC may consider a PA preceptor, which Iowa isn't.
Does Iowa need to approve UC before I start?
The Iowa Board doesn't approve programs from other states. It does expect a school to secure the Bureau of Iowa College Aid's permission to operate, follow Iowa law and write clinical contracts with specific terms. Those are UC's jobs; yours are the preceptor, the packet and the site's onboarding.
