UC programs a Nebraska student can take

Nebraska is off UC's list of seven closed states, so students in the online MSN, the DNP tracks, the certificates and the RN-to-BSN can all train there. Nebraska needs none of UC's extra state forms, but it is on the handbook's supplemental background check list.

Why UC's rules carry the weight here

Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services reserves Board of Nursing approval for pre-licensure programs, the ones ending in the NCLEX, and any of those teaching students in Nebraska must get in touch with the Board. Post-licensure education, whether online or delivered some other way, is outside what the Board regulates, so no Board step stands between you and a UC clinical there.

DHHS leaves preceptor qualifications for post-licensure programs to the school, and schools make preceptor arrangements with facilities directly. So UC's standard governs: preceptors hold a graduate degree and certification, have practiced in the role at least a year and carry an unencumbered Nebraska license, and NP students spend a fifth or more of their hours with an NP in their population. One DHHS point lands on UC rather than on you. Because DHHS follows NCSBN guidance placing practice in the student's location, it wants faculty licensed in that state, which for APRN students means a Nebraska APRN license. Your CSC can tell you how UC handles that.

UC's supplemental Nebraska background check

UC's 2026-27 Student Handbook lists Nebraska among 18 states where clinicals trigger a supplemental state background check, over and above UC's standard one. Work from the instructions UC issues for it with Critical Requirements and leave time before your first term. Under the handbook, extra checks and fingerprinting are paid by the student. Full practice after a transition period

AANP rates Nebraska as full practice once an NP has completed 2,000 hours under a supervising provider. UC doesn't ask about that transition; it asks whether the NP has spent at least a year in the role and holds the right certification, so a newer NP may qualify for UC while still finishing Nebraska's hours. Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, and our search

The Omaha metro, which crosses into Iowa, counted roughly a million residents in the 2025 Census estimates, around 887,000 of them in Nebraska. Lincoln followed with about 352,000 and Grand Island with about 78,000.
