UC APRN clinicals in Kansas
Kansas is open for UC clinicals, and it's the one state where UC adds a course. If UC admits you as an APRN student from Kansas, your plan includes NURS8098 Clinical Elective, whose variable credits cover the extra hours the Kansas State Board of Nursing has required since March 1, 2025. KSBN also expects your preceptor to hold a Kansas APRN license in your role. UC doesn't accept PA preceptors here.

Why UC built NURS8098 for Kansas
KSBN leaves out-of-state online APRN programs alone while Kansas residents enroll. The Board looks at the program only when its graduate applies for a Kansas APRN license. It then checks for national accreditation, a total of 45 credit hours or more, 3 or more credits in each of the three advanced courses (pharmacology, health assessment, pathophysiology), and a floor on role-specialty clinical hours: 500 for students admitted before March 1, 2025, and 750 for later admissions.
Several UC tracks carry fewer than 750 hours, so UC added NURS8098 Clinical Elective only for Kansas APRN students, to make up the difference between UC's hours and the Board's. Kansas preceptors and UC's rules side by side
KSBN's guidance on APRN clinicals held in Kansas, citing K.A.R. 60-17-104, expects an oriented preceptor with a signed agreement who holds a Kansas APRN license in the role you're studying; clinically supervising APRN students takes a Kansas APRN license. UC's separate checklist adds graduate education, certification, a year's experience in the role and a Kansas license with no encumbrance.
Put together, a Kansas FNP student should build the search around Kansas-licensed family NPs. UC's FNP rules also allow MD or DO preceptors in primary care, so if you're weighing a physician in Kansas, ask your CSC how UC reads KSBN's guidance first. PAs are out, since UC's PA list omits Kansas. The track rules are on UC preceptor requirements.
Check the preceptor's Kansas APRN license, and the role it names, before anything else. Your multistate RN license covers you, not your preceptor.
Your license, and faculty who won't visit
KSBN reads K.S.A. 65-1124 as letting an APRN student train in Kansas as a student of advanced practice nursing, practicing on a multistate RN license or on one issued by Kansas alone. Kansas has been a Nurse Licensure Compact member since July 1, 2019; no APRN Compact is in effect. UC's side is on RN license for clinicals.
Kansas asks little of UC's faculty: those teaching online need no Kansas license, the state doesn't require faculty to visit during clinicals, and any faculty member who does visit comes as a visitor or lay person.
Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka
Roughly 938,000 people lived in the Kansas portion of the Kansas City metro in the 2025 Census estimates. Wichita came next with about 664,000; Topeka had about 233,000, and Manhattan roughly 136,000. Among the large systems are Stormont Vail Health, Ascension Via Christi, HCA's Wesley Healthcare in Wichita and The University of Kansas Health System, named as examples rather than UC partners. Kansas turned up no preceptor incentive in our research.
Kansas City students can look across the state line into Missouri, which UC also leaves open, but a Missouri clinic runs on Missouri's rules, and AANP rates Missouri restricted where it rates Kansas full practice. See Missouri.

Questions UC students ask
I was admitted before March 1, 2025. Do I need NURS8098?
KSBN's hour check for students admitted before that date is 500 role-specialty hours, and every UC NP track carries at least 504. UC ties NURS8098 to the extra hours the Board has required since March 1, 2025. Confirm your own plan with your advisor rather than assuming either way.
Can a Missouri-licensed NP precept me at a clinic in Kansas City, Kansas?
KSBN's guidance points to a Kansas APRN license for anyone precepting or supervising APRN students in Kansas, and UC wants the preceptor licensed, unencumbered, in the clinical state. So a Missouri NP working on the Kansas side would need Kansas licensure. At a clinic on the Missouri side, Missouri's rules apply instead.
Does NURS8098 mean I need more preceptor time?
The course exists to add clinical hours toward the Board's total, so plan for more precepted time than your track's standard hours. Ask your CSC how the elective's hours are set up and logged in eMedley before you line up preceptors for it.
Does KSBN approve UC before I start clinicals?
No. By KSBN's account, a Kansas student can enroll in an out-of-state online APRN program without the Board signing off first. Its review happens when that graduate asks for a Kansas APRN license, which is why the hour gap matters: it would surface at licensure, not at admission.
