UC can run clinicals in Maine, and Maine is among the states where UC will look at a physician assistant as your preceptor, case by case. It also sits on UC's list of states that need a supplemental background check. The Maine Board of Nursing, for its part, has published nothing we could find about out-of-state programs placing students here.

Physician assistants in a Maine plan
Maine made the Clinical Planning page's list of 14 states where a PA can precept UC students. Each PA gets an individual review, hours are capped, and PA time never substitutes for the NP time your track demands: a fifth of NP-track hours with an NP in your population focus. A midwifery student's PA hours top out at 20, confined to ANW8006, and need the program director's sign-off. PA preceptors at UC has the details.
In Maine, an NP earns full practice after 24 months of supervision by a physician or NP; employment at a clinic or hospital whose medical director is a physician also counts. UC measures preceptors differently: at least a master's, current certification, a year's experience in the role and a Maine license without encumbrances. The detail is on UC's preceptor requirements.
The supplemental check, and what Maine's rules leave out
Maine is one of the states where UC's 2026-27 Student Handbook calls for a supplemental state background check before clinicals, and like other added checks it's a student cost. Ask your CSC which Maine check to order; background check and drug screen explains the checks every UC student completes.
Maine's rules say little that touches a program like UC's. Chapter 7 of the Board's rules deals with approving Maine's own prelicensure programs and contains nothing on out-of-state placements. The student exemption in 32 MRSA §2103(2) is written for programs leading to initial licensure, which doesn't describe a practicing RN in a graduate program. You work on your own license instead, and UC lists no Maine form.
Licensing with a compact license
Maine's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018. UC's clinical rule asks for an RN license valid where you train, and either a Maine-issued license or your home compact state's multistate license will do. Your preceptor, whatever their profession, needs an unencumbered Maine license under UC's rules, and Maine hasn't enacted the APRN Compact. New Hampshire, Maine's only neighboring state, is also a compact member and also on UC's supplemental-check list, but UC doesn't take PA preceptors there.

The Portland-South Portland metro holds about 578,000 people, Bangor about 158,000 and Lewiston-Auburn about 116,000. MaineHealth and Northern Light Health head the systems in our research, with MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare behind them. None is a confirmed UC site, and we found no Maine preceptor incentive.

Questions UC students ask
Could a physician assistant precept my UC clinical in Maine?
Possibly. UC permits PA preceptors in Maine, but only after your CSC reviews the individual PA, and only for a limited share of your hours. In practice that means pairing the PA with an NP who covers the NP hours your track requires. Ask your CSC what limit applies before the PA fills in the Preceptor Application.
Does Maine require a separate state form for UC clinicals?
UC doesn't list one; its added state paperwork covers California, North Dakota and Wyoming only. We also found no Maine Board of Nursing guidance about programs from other states using Maine clinical sites. The step Maine does add is UC's supplemental background check, so raise that with your CSC early in your planning.
Does Maine's student exemption cover UC nurse practitioner students?
It covers nursing that's part of a board-approved program leading to initial licensure (32 MRSA §2103(2)), which fits prelicensure students rather than licensed RNs in a graduate program. For UC, the question that matters is your own RN license: Maine-issued, or a multistate license from the compact state where you live.
Can I do UC clinicals in New Hampshire while living in Maine?
Yes, New Hampshire is open to UC as well. A multistate license from Maine covers you there, and your preceptor needs an unencumbered New Hampshire license. New Hampshire is also on UC's supplemental-check list, so ask your CSC whether you need a New Hampshire check instead of, or along with, a Maine one. UC won't accept PA preceptors in New Hampshire.
