How far the exclusion reaches

Massachusetts is one of seven states where UC's Clinical Planning page says the College of Nursing isn't authorized for clinical activity. The MSN, DNP and post-master's certificate pages reuse that list to screen applicants, and the RN-to-BSN keeps Massachusetts on its own shorter list. Arizona and New York get an RN-to-BSN exception; Massachusetts doesn't.

UC doesn't say why Massachusetts is on the list. Recheck the Clinical Planning page each term rather than assuming it stays fixed; UC state authorization summarizes the whole list.

If you're applying from Massachusetts

UC's online graduate programs won't accept an application from a Massachusetts location. If you're relocating to New Hampshire, Vermont or Connecticut, all three open to UC, ask UC admissions how it treats someone who moves before applying and what it accepts as proof of location. UC's pages don't address that timing, so get the answer in writing. New York and Rhode Island, the state's other neighbors, are closed too.

If you're enrolled and moving to Massachusetts

No UC hours can happen at a Massachusetts site, and UC's pages don't explain what becomes of an enrolled student who relocates there. Raise it with your Clinical Site Coordinator and advisor before you sign a lease. Ask whether you can stay enrolled from a Massachusetts address and whether a site in an open state, such as southern New Hampshire, would be accepted while you live across the line.

Massachusetts runs its own approval process

The state adds a gate of its own. Under 244 CMR 6.03(2), a nursing program whose parent institution is based outside Massachusetts must have the Board of Registration in Nursing sign off on clinical experiences there. Part A, covering the institution, is due every year at least six months ahead of any placement; Part B is filed per placement, 30 or more days before the start. Students can't begin until the Board's approval letter arrives. The Board frames all of this around programs preparing graduates for the NCLEX and is silent on graduate APRN programs. For UC students, UC's own list settles the matter first.

Licensing while the compact waits

The compact became law in Massachusetts in November 2024, yet the Board treats it as inactive until the state finishes implementing it, with May 2027 as the goal. In the meantime, holding another state's multistate license doesn't let you work as a nurse in Massachusetts. AANP rates the state full practice once an NP completes two years under a qualifying supervising APRN or physician.
