UC nurse practitioner clinicals in New Jersey
New Jersey is open to UC clinicals, with three details to plan around. UC's handbook adds a supplemental New Jersey background check, the state rates NP practice as reduced, and New York, just across the river, is closed to UC graduate clinicals. Keep your site in New Jersey or another open state.

UC's exclusion list skips New Jersey, so its online graduate and RN-to-BSN students here can generally train here. Residency rules still keep a few tracks out of reach.

The New York line, and the Philadelphia side
The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro counts roughly 7.1 million of its people on the New Jersey side. If your job or your best lead sits across the river, UC hours still stop at the state line. New York is closed to UC graduate clinicals, so a clinic on the far bank can't host your rotation even if you live minutes away.
South Jersey faces the other direction. About 1.4 million state residents belong to the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro, and both Pennsylvania and Delaware are open to UC. Pennsylvania also carries a supplemental background check, while New York explains the one UC exception there, the RN-to-BSN.
Working in New York doesn't make a New York site usable for UC hours. Keep the search on the New Jersey side or in another open state.
Precepting under joint protocols
AANP lists New Jersey as reduced practice. An NP there needs joint protocols with a collaborating physician before ordering medications or devices. That governs how your preceptor practices, not whether UC will take them. UC's own bar: a graduate degree (master's or above), certification from a recognized body, at least a year in the role, and a New Jersey license carrying no encumbrances. On NP tracks, one hour in five must be spent with an NP in the student's population focus.
Physician assistants are out. New Jersey isn't among the states where UC lets a PA precept. UC's preceptor requirements break down who qualifies by track.
The supplemental check, and New Jersey's rules
UC's 2026-27 Student Handbook names New Jersey among the states whose clinicals require a supplemental state background check, layered on the CastleBranch check every student completes. The handbook counts extra checks among costs students carry. Ask your CSC which New Jersey check to order and when; background check and drug screen covers UC's standard pieces.
On the state side, our research found no Board of Nursing requirement that an outside program get permission, or even give notice, before sending students to New Jersey sites. N.J.A.C. 13:37 governs the Board's accreditation of New Jersey programs, and section 1.10(c) speaks only to New Jersey programs sending students elsewhere. The Board's website blocked access during research, so any guidance posted there went unchecked. UC lists no New Jersey form.

Since November 15, 2021, New Jersey has belonged to the Nurse Licensure Compact. For UC, your license has to cover the state where the clinical takes place; here that can be a New Jersey license or the multistate license your compact home state issued. The APRN Compact isn't law here.

Questions UC students ask
I live in New Jersey. Can my UC clinical be in New York?
No. New York is one of the seven states closed to UC graduate clinicals, and UC applies that to where the clinical takes place, not where you live. A New Jersey resident can train at a New Jersey site or cross into Pennsylvania or Delaware, both open to UC. The RN-to-BSN is the one UC program allowed in New York.
What is the supplemental New Jersey background check?
UC's handbook lists New Jersey among 18 states that need a state-specific check for clinicals, on top of the standard CastleBranch background check. UC's public pages don't describe the New Jersey check itself, so ask your CSC which vendor and form to use, and leave time for results before your site start date.
Does New Jersey's joint-protocol rule affect my preceptor's eligibility?
Not directly. The joint protocol covers how a New Jersey NP orders medications and devices with a collaborating physician. UC checks separate things: the preceptor's graduate degree, certification, time in the role and New Jersey license status. Physicians can precept on many UC tracks too, though NP tracks still need at least 20% of hours with an NP.
Would UC accept a physician assistant preceptor in New Jersey?
No. UC accepts PA preceptors only in 14 listed states, and New Jersey isn't one of them. Connecticut is the closest state on that list. In New Jersey, choose from the preceptor types your track's clinical requirements name, and check them against PA preceptors at UC if a PA offers to help.
