UC nursing students and clinicals in Utah
Utah is open to UC's MSN, DNP, post-master's certificate and RN-to-BSN clinicals, and UC attaches no Utah form or extra background check. Utah's own rule, R156-31b-609, sets conditions for out-of-state programs and wants every preceptor they use licensed in Utah or a compact state. Since Utah belongs to the compact, your RN license may already be valid here.

UC programs open in Utah
No UC exclusion list names Utah, so DNP students can train here, which isn't the case in Washington. Only UC's tri-state-residents-only tracks are off the table. Compare states on where UC allows clinicals.

Utah's conditions on schools from other states
Utah Admin. Code R156-31b-609 treats pre-licensure and graduate programs alike. An outside school has to satisfy the Division and the Board before it puts students in a Utah agency. The checklist: its home-state board's approval, a nursing accreditor with federal Education Department recognition, faculty the program employs who are tied to a college or university and, when supervising in person, licensed in Utah or a compact party state, and a plan for picking and overseeing preceptors and sites.
Each year by August 1, the school also reports how many students it placed in Utah facilities, certifies that everyone teaching or precepting in person there is licensed in Utah or a compact state, and confirms its accreditation. That filing is UC's job, but it explains why your CSC looks hard at the license lines on the Preceptor Application.
Who can precept you in Utah
Two filters apply. Utah's: whoever precepts for an out-of-state school needs a license in good standing from Utah or from a state in the Nurse Licensure Compact. UC's: graduate education at master's level or above, certification from a body such as ANCC, AANPCB, PNCB or AACN, twelve months or more in the role, an unencumbered license in the clinical state, and at least a fifth of NP-track hours spent with an NP who shares your population focus. UC's preceptor requirements has the detail.
A physician assistant won't work, because Utah isn't one of UC's PA states. AANP rates Utah as full practice. Nurse-midwifery students will see certified nurse midwives named in the Utah board's own title; under UC's rules, half or more of your midwifery hours still belong with a CNM or CM.
Licensing: two compacts, one in force
Utah's NLC membership dates to January 19, 2018. An RN license valid in Utah can therefore be a Utah license or a multistate one from another member state, and either meets UC's RN license rule. UC's supplemental background check list leaves Utah off, and our research found nothing in the way of a Utah preceptor incentive.
The APRN Compact is a different story. Utah enacted it in March 2022, but it needs seven member states to switch on, and only five had enacted it by 2026, Utah and neighboring Wyoming among them. Until it operates, it doesn't change how your NP preceptor is licensed.
Where to look in Utah, and where we fit
Utah's clinicians concentrate in the Salt Lake City-Murray, Provo-Orem-Lehi and Ogden metros, plus St. George. MountainStar Healthcare, Intermountain Health and University of Utah Health are the large systems, named as examples of where preceptors work rather than places known to host UC students.

Questions UC students ask
Does Utah require UC to do anything before my clinicals?
Yes, on the school's side. An outside program has to show home-state approval, recognized accreditation, qualified faculty and a supervision plan before its students start, then report to Utah every August 1. The rule speaks to programs, not students. Your CSC or constateauth@uc.edu can tell you where UC stands for your term.
Can my Utah preceptor be licensed in another state?
Utah will accept a preceptor whose license, in good standing, comes from Utah or any other Nurse Licensure Compact party state. UC separately wants an active, unencumbered license good in whichever state hosts your clinical. If your preceptor's license comes from outside Utah, ask your CSC how UC reads it before the packet goes in.
Can I do UC DNP clinicals in Utah?
Yes. Utah isn't among the states UC excludes for DNP programs, so BSN-to-DNP NP tracks and the post-MSN DNP can use Utah sites, subject to UC's usual approvals. The UC tracks closed to Utah residents are AGACNP and the AGPCNP and PNP-AC certificates, which admit Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana residents only.
Does the APRN Compact help my Utah NP preceptor?
Not yet. Utah passed the APRN Compact in 2022, but the compact takes effect only after seven states enact it, and five had done so as of 2026. For now, an NP precepting you in Utah needs licensure that satisfies Utah's rule and UC's, with no multistate privilege for the APRN role.
